SCHENECTADY, NY – December 17, 2014 – SI Group, Inc. announced today that it is in the process of completing site selection and engineering studies for another major Biphenol capacity expansion to be completed in 2018. The expansion is expected to bring another 5,000 to 8,000 metric tons per year of capacity online. This announcement comes on the heels of the previously-announced increases in production of 1,000 metric tons per year starting in early 2015, as well as the 1,000 metric tons per year expansion approved for implementation in 2016.
As part of the site selection process, three of the company’s existing sites are under consideration for the Biphenol expansion: Newport, Tennessee; newly-acquired Orangeburg, South Carolina; and Singapore.
Biphenol is a key building block used in engineering plastics that replace metal in high performance applications. This replacement provide benefits of mechanical strength and lightweight construction, leading to increased energy efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. Biphenol is also used in a variety of specialized plastics that replace conventional materials to deliver enhanced properties, including flame retardancy, thermal resistance, and mechanical strength.
“As a leader in this industry, we’re very aware of the significant and long-term growth potential of the Biphenol market. In order to meet our customers’ needs, new capacity needs to be brought online by 2018,” said Neil Greeff, Senior Director, Strategic Markets. “Once these expansions are complete, SI Group will have added more than 10,000 metric tons of Biphenol manufacturing capacity between 2011 and 2018.

This expected expansion will further enable SI Group to support its customers’ capabilities to deliver advanced engineering plastics for a variety of end-use products and applications, including medical devices and instruments, packaging, electronics, and aerospace applications.
