Volunteer STAR Award for Tennessee Plant

SCHENECTADY, NY – September 17, 2013 – SI Group is proud to announce that its manufacturing plant in Newport, Tennessee has been awarded the Volunteer STAR Award by the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA). The site has earned this top safety award as a result of its outstanding safety record and ongoing commitment to safety and health issues.

“To say that we are pleased with this designation is an understatement,” said Jeff Prickett, Director of Tennessee Operations. “This award is the culmination of the tremendous effort of everyone at our Tennessee facility and the company’s relentless pursuit of on-the-job safety.”

The Volunteer STAR program is nationally-recognized and closely follows the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), a voluntary initiative designed to recognize workplaces that have outstanding safety systems and performance. The Volunteer STAR designation is the state’s highest honor and distinguishes sites with outstanding health and safety systems. Recipients of the award must demonstrate safety records, including Total Case Incident Rates (TCIR) and lost workday case rates, below the national average, among many other metrics. Currently, there are 38 Volunteer STAR sites in Tennessee.

“SI Group is absolutely committed to ensuring the safety of our employees, our community and the environment,” said William Scheffer, Vice President Operational Excellence. “In fact, we actively seek out safety-related best practices in our manufacturing facilities—and then we find ways to incorporate them into our sites globally.”

SI Group conducts its business according to the Guiding Principles of Responsible Care® with a commitment to protecting the health, safety and securities of its employees and the public.  The company has set its goal at zero negative impact on people, the environment and its reputation. The Volunteer STAR Award reflects SI Group's commitment to these values, and serves as an inspiration for future success in advancing worksite-based safety and health. In 2009, SI Group’s Texas site achieved the national VPP Star certification from OSHA.
